The cross-border European region Viadrina is a memory landscape of special value, in which especially the 20th century left deep scars. The rage of World War II and the following forced migration of millions of Polish and German are visible in many places and are kept awake. After that the Cold War left its marks in the landscape and finally the peaceful European unification process created new places of remembrance. But also, centuries before that formed a memorable cultural heritage for this region which cannot be lost.
The memorials Seelower Height and Martyr Museum Slonsk, the destroyed old city of Kostrzyn are equally important places of remembrance as the traces of the Prussians, the industrialisation, the land reclamation or natural catastrophes. The former border crossing point Kostrzyn tells the youngest history of Europe.
With the funding project “Places of Remembrance Oder-Warta” the project partners city Seelow (lead partner), city Kostrzyn and Odra and the community Slonsk, follow the goal of maintaining, strengthening and generating a touristic value together for the unique memory landscape in the European region Viadrina or Oder-Warta-region.
Remembrance refers here to three epochs:
- the "joint historic culture area“ on both sides of the Oder,
- the "fate place“ of the inhuman Nazi time and its consequences and
- the “meeting place” as the start into a peaceful neighbourhood to a united Europe.
With three funding projects (railway building Seelow (Mark) in Seelow, former culture house in Slonsk and Villa Wagner in Kostrzyn and Odra) the experience offer places of remembrance is expanded and border-crossing connection between documentation, communication and action is created. This develops central new touristic attractions for the culture touristic brand, by which visitors can be informed and guided through the region.
The investment projects complete each other and create a new quality of active experiences and learning, documenting and communicating about younger history of the region. This targets mainly the growing up generation with different communication behaviour and new demands of information brokering.
Primary project goal is the increase of visitor numbers in the cultural area Odra-Warthe by developing and networking border-crossing touristic offers regarding “places of remembrance”.
The activities planned by the project will among others strengthen, complete and topically connect the touristic offers or existing places of remembrance and exploit them under a border-crossing touristic brand “Places of Remembrance Oder-Warta” nationally. This increases the market presence and visitor potency of all locations with economic effects for those involved. ECCOFORT develops the touristic brand “Places of Remembrance Oder-Warta” on behalf of the city Seelow.
Das Projekt wird gefördert durch den Europäischen Fonds für regionale Entwicklung, Kooperationsprogramm für grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit (INTERREG VA BB-PL 2014-2020). Lead-Partner ist die Stadt Seelow. Die Projektlaufzeit endet voraussichtlch im Juni 2021.
